Hi Scott,
Regarding protecting walls when aciding staining floors: we hadn't yet decided how to do it, but folks we know who did it simply taped a strip of plastic around the perimetre of their rooms and taped over their wood work with masking tape. I believe they had it covered up to a foot in height.
If you have other suggestions I welcome them!
